Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder. DBT was first develop by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan (1980) to treat  suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder .Dialectical behavior  therapy is a therapy that helps people suffering from mood disorder, suicidal ideation, self-harm, substance abuse. This therapy helps the patients by increasing their cognitive and emotional regulation. Dialectical behavior therapy is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. DBT include 4 components such as individual, group, therapist consultation team and phone coaching. DBT is taught as a series of skills in four modules: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. Distress Tolerance skills are used to help us cope and survive during a crisis, and help us tolerate short term or long term pain .Tolerating distress includes a mindfulness of breath and mindful awareness of situations and ourselves.
